Classroom Management Plan
Appropriate behavior of individuals and the classroom will continually be reinforced with praise and occasional rewards. We expect that the children in our classrooms will support each other and be responsible for their own learning and behavior. A classroom contract will be created the first week of school to set expectations for classroom behavior.
If a child makes a choice that does not support our classroom success, the student will first receive a verbal warning. If the behavior continues the student will be given a Classroom Behavior Slip that must be filled out completely, signed by parent, and then returned to the teacher the following day. Recess will be missed if this slip is not returned the day after being issued. At any time if a behavior issue is deemed severe enough, an SSR (Silent Supervised Recess) may be issued. SSRs may also be issued by recess aides, or any other staff that witnesses the behavior problem.
Unprepared Procedure
To make the most of the time we have with students each day it is very important that students come to class prepared and ready to learn.
If a student comes to class unprepared:
- 1st offense: Name on the board
- 2nd offense: Check next to name
- 3rd offense: Classroom Behavior Slip to be filled out and signed by a parent, loss of afternoon (15 min.) recess if not returned the following day.
Homework
Homework is a bridge between school and home. When parents, students and teachers work together, homework can and should be a valuable and relevant part of the student’s instructional program. We believe that homework is an integral part of the learning process, and that homework given to students should be meaningful and pertinent to their work in school.
***Planners should be signed by an adult EVERY night. This is part of a student's job to insure they are prepared for the following day and to make you aware of the things they did during class. Three days of unsigned planner in a row will result in a detention.
Homework provides opportunities for students to:
- Accept responsibility
- Learn time management skills
- Develop good study habits and self-discipline
- Share information with parents about what has been learned
Homework provides opportunities for parents to:
- Assist in the learning process
- Become aware of grade level curriculum
- Spend meaningful time with children
In Fifth Grade the following policies remain consistent in both classrooms.
- All unfinished work from the school day is considered homework. Each student is expected to finish his/her homework every night and return it the following day completed.
- If homework is not turned in on the day and time it is due it is considered late and the child’s grade for that assignment will drop by 20%. If work is not turned in by Friday it will be a zero in the grade book.
- Long term projects will be assigned throughout the year. These projects will only be accepted 1 day late and will be marked down 20%. Projects will NOT be accepted more than 1 day late.
- Book projects will be required each marking period. Book reports are considered long-term projects and will follow the same turn in guidelines.
Grading System
Quarterly report cards will be sent home. Fifth graders with receive letters based on their proficiency in each area. Students are assessed in the following areas: Language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Progress reports will also be sent home mid-marking period for students receiving a C+ or lower. Student progress can be monitored using the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus.
Friday Folders
Friday folders will be sent home every Friday and must be returned on Monday morning. Please make sure the folders are emptied before they are sent back to school with your child.
